Insurance
There are numerous insurance companies in Switzerland. But which are compulsory and which are voluntary? Here we give a brief overview on this topic:
- Compulsory insurance: In Switzerland, you must take out car insurance (if you have a car), health insurance and accident insurance.
- Voluntary insurance: These are household contents insurance, legal expenses insurance, building insurance or private provision.
There are various contact points in the Upper Valais for both compulsory and voluntary insurance. The best thing to do is to ask one of these offices to advise you which insurance policies are suitable and make sense for you. You will find a good overview under the following two links:

In Switzerland, taxes are levied by the federal government, the cantons and the municipalities, although the tax rates vary from canton to canton. Swiss nationals and foreigners with a permanent residence permit (C permit) must complete a tax return each year, on the basis of which their taxes are calculated. For people with a B permit and a short-term residence permit (L permit), withholding tax is deducted directly from their wages.
